Find info concerning Whatcom Community College mining engineering, registering for elective courses, and taking free practice exams online. Whether you are considering an associates degree (for electronics engineering), or a bachelor of science in engineering (for electrical, mechanical or civil engineering), you will find many doors opening after graduation. If you complete the mining engineering program, for example, there are a variety of concentrations that may appeal to you such as petroleum engineering, mineral exploration, or alternative energy. Further, due to advances in mining engineering technology, there is a growing shortage of mineral engineering graduates, and of skilled technical engineers in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Whatcom Community College.
Mining techniques have dramatically transformed over many years, with technological advances improving efficiency and safety. In the discovery stage of mineral exploration, mining engineers work closely with geologists to identify minerals and assess reserve quantities. Mineral engineers may then drill core samples and conduct surface surveys, searching for specific compounds and ores. Unless the mineral exploration is done on public lands, the property owners may play a significant role in mining exploration.
Generally, mining is either done from the surface or underground. Surface mining requires the stripping of surface vegetation, dirt, and if necessary, layers of bedrock in order to reach buried ore deposits. Additionally, explosives may be called for in order to facilitate breakage. Hard minerals such as limestone, sand, gravel, and slate are generally quarried into a series of benches. Strip mining, on the other hand, is more appropriate for softer minerals such as clays and phosphate. In-situ mining can be done from the surface using dissolving agents, retrieving the ore via pumps. Finally, hydraulic jets may be utilized to wash away the overburden or to clear out the ore itself.

Factory Robot Design
Manufacturing facilities around the world are increasing adoption of industrial robots to increase productivity and maintain competitiveness. In both the US and China particularly, application of industrial robots is on the rise. Industrial robots are used in factories and warehouses for material handling and heavy manufacturing operations such as welding, cutting, and assembly. As robots increasingly must co-exist with human workers areas, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) studies warn that most robot accidents occur during non-routine operating conditions, such as programming, maintenance, testing, setup, or adjustment. During many of these operations the worker may temporarily be within the robot's working envelope, where unintended operations could result in injuries.US sales of industrial robots grew by 66 percent in the past 5 years alone, according to the International Federation of Robots. During this period, US sales increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost 14 percent, despite a decline during the recent recession. The Robotic Industries Association (RIA) reported that the world market for industrial robots is driven primarily by demand from motor vehicle manufacturing, followed by the electronics industry. The major foreign-owned industrial robot producers with US factories are from Japan (Fanuc, Kawasaki, Yaskawa-Motoman), Germany (Kuka), and Switzerland (ABB and Staubli). US manufacturers that design and produce industrial robots include Adept Technology, Genmark Automation, Rethink Robotics, and SAGE Automation. In addition to automotive robots, these companies produce robots for the electronics, medical, and logistics industries.

Engineering Job Listings
The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.Job listings below are updated hourly: | Starting Salary (up to) | 10 Year Salary (up to) |
